We are excited to announce the completion of the evaluation process for our second funding call, which closed on April 30th. From a diverse pool of applications, 35 innovative projects have been selected, all dedicated to enhancing water literacy in European schools. These projects, hailing from 12 countries, represent a significant step forward in our mission to integrate ocean and freshwater topics into educational curriculums!
The selected projects are spread across two crucial themes: freshwater and marine ecosystems: 16 projects focus on freshwater, while 19 concentrate on marine ecosystems. They address various critical topics, including the interconnectedness of marine and freshwater ecosystems, the impact of plastic pollution, and biodiversity conservation. They involve innovative approaches such as creating marine laboratories, conducting comprehensive biodiversity assessments, and promoting environmental awareness through creative activities like augmented reality videos and art exhibits. These initiatives aim to bridge gaps between coastal and inland schools, foster multidisciplinary learning, and engage students and communities in active conservation efforts.
Schools lead the chosen projects from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Spain, and the United Kingdom. These initiatives will commence on September 1st and run for up to 12 months. Through these projects, we aim to inspire and educate future generations about the importance of protecting and preserving our aquatic ecosystems.
The evaluation process was rigorous, involving more than 20 experts who meticulously reviewed each application. Feedback has been provided to all schools not selected this round, encouraging them to refine and reapply in future calls. We are committed to supporting all applicants in their journey to enhance water literacy.
We also urge all applicants to consider becoming Blue Schools and joining the Network of European Blue Schools, which recognizes excellence in water and ocean literacy education.
