What ProBleu Made Possible

Between 2023 and 2025, ProBleu launched four funding calls to support European and associated countries’ schools in becoming Blue Schools, integrating the Network of European Blue Schools (NEBS). These calls empowered schools to develop hands-on water literacy and citizen science projects aligned with the European Union’s “Restore our Oceans and Waters” Mission.

Until the third call, more than 30 schools across Europe received funds to connect students with the water and encourage environmental responsibility within their communities!

Who Benefited

The ProBleu funding calls were open to schools across Europe and associated countries. Selected projects covered a wide range of aquatic environments, such as rivers, lakes, ponds, and the ocean.

Funding was granted to primary and secondary schools and vocational training centres, encouraging participation across all levels of education.

In the last two calls, priority was given to countries that had not yet received ProBleu funding and those where the Blue Schools network was still under development. Thanks to this flexible strategy, ProBleu successfully reached all the eligible countries and funded projects in 31 of them.

None of this would have been possible without the passion and dedication of teachers across Europe and beyond. Their commitment to Blue Education is at the heart of every funded project, inspiring students to understand, value, and protect our waters and planet.

The teachers involved come from a wide variety of backgrounds — including art, biology, language, history, and chemistry — showing that water and ocean literacy can be a truly cross-curricular approach.

Their work demonstrates that there are many ways to nurture knowledge, curiosity, and care for aquatic environments in any type of school.
