FlowGuard: Empowering Education; Securing Waters

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

2nd FUNDING CALL

This project is dedicated to promoting water conservation and environmental awareness among students. The initiative combines education, fieldwork, and creative expression to foster a lasting commitment to protecting freshwater ecosystems.

Project Objectives:

  1. Increase Knowledge: Educate students about local rivers and the impact of hydropower plants on ecosystems.
  2. Engage in Conservation: Involve students in river protection activities and critical discussions about river management.
  3. Raise Awareness: Use art and social media to highlight the importance of river conservation.

Key Activities:

  1. Fieldwork: Compare biodiversity in free-flowing and dammed rivers (Krivaja, Orlja vs. Gostović). Measure hydrological parameters, water quality, and assess habitats.
  2. Expert Presentations: Learn about legal battles for river protection and sustainable management practices.
  3. Art Activism: Create artworks inspired by river ecosystems to raise awareness.
  4. Surveys: Conduct surveys on visual pollution and the impact of dams on local communities.
  5. Workshops: Host workshops and panel discussions to share findings and discuss conservation strategies.

The project began by inviting interested students. In our first meeting, we discussed details for the trip to Zavidovići and Olovo. Once there, we worked with local students and specialists in Biology and Geography, conducting three days of fieldwork. Our findings showed that hydroelectric plants negatively impact river ecosystems, especially in remote rivers with unique environments. Next, we’ll share our insights with other students and have already started planning upcoming activities.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Student Engagement: At least 20 students will gain in-depth knowledge of river ecosystems and the impact of dams, while 750 more will participate in workshops and local river fieldwork.
  • Community Involvement: Broader community engagement through awareness campaigns and educational materials.

Innovative Features:

  • Interdisciplinary Approach: Combining science, geography, art, and digital society to provide a holistic understanding of water conservation.
  • Open Resources: Making all educational materials, data, and project findings freely accessible online.
  • Community Engagement: Partnering with local NGOs, universities, and media to maximize outreach and impact.

Long-term Impact:

  • Increased Environmental Literacy: Enhancing water and environmental literacy among students and the community.
  • Sustainable Practices: Encouraging sustainable behaviors and practices through education and active participation.
  • Future Advocacy: Inspiring the next generation to advocate for river and ecosystem conservation.

By integrating fieldwork, creative activities, and community outreach, FlowGuard aims to create a generation of informed and active citizens dedicated to preserving Bosnia and Herzegovina’s valuable natural resources.
