Introducing marine sustainable food resources in Life at Sea
Stromstad, Sweden
1st FUNDING CALL
Strömstad Gymnasium will continue to organize the open-schooling field day “Life at Sea” certified within NEBS (see Life at Sea – European Commission (Europa.eu).
The objective of this project is to highlight sustainable marine food production, broaden the marine perspective for all students and teachers and deepen external collaboration. External knowledge and experience from local marine aqua-tech companies producing different innovative sustainable low-trophic species such as algae, oysters and sea urchins, experienced seafood chiefs and aquaculture researchers from TML with earlier experience in innovative marine products are used in different planned school activities. The lunch served to all 380 students at Life at Sea Day will be based on marine sustainable ingredients.
In this activity, the kitchen personnel will also be involved in competence development for further use of sustainable, innovative products in school lunches. Also, in a workshop off-school, students will prepare marine dishes based on innovative products. The collaborators will also be invited to the school to hold pitches to highlight their production methods and products for year 1 and present at the Life at Sea day for year 3 students.
Another activity is that the school will grow algae from a bouy in the archipelago close by in cooperation with a local algae company. We will be able to visit the bouy and use the harvested algae. Students in year 3 will calculate the carbon dioxide withdrawal during the growing season and compare it with the school’s carbon dioxide emissions. We expect the students to be more aware and motivated to use these food products in the future and to be aware of job potential and careers in the biotech sector.
Another objective is to allow the students in different school programmes, but not least nature science in different grades, to perform study visits to our local reputable research station, namely Tjärnö Marine Laboratory (TML), Gothenburg University. Costs for student travel and for using their facilities and guidance are covered. Practice in scientific methodology and experimental set-ups are obtained as well as inspiration for higher education.
