Water Heroes: It’s time for action!
Chania, Greece
2nd FUNDING CALL
“Water Heroes: It’s time for action!” (W.HE.ACT.) aims to preserve the health of local water bodies. This initiative involves research and analysis to understand the biodiversity, water quality, and ecological integrity of lakes and rivers in Crete.
Over ten months, students will engage in hands-on activities and interactive learning to assess the local aquatic ecosystems. The project includes conducting thorough research, collecting data, and analyzing water quality indicators to compile comprehensive reports on the state of these water bodies.
By the end of the project, the 8th Primary School of Chania hopes to empower students and the wider community to become proactive stewards of the local environment. The W.HE.ACT. project is a testament to the school’s commitment to safeguarding the health and integrity of Crete’s precious aquatic resources for all benefit.

Through implementing our aquatic awareness project, we realized that hands-on, creative activities significantly enhance students’ understanding and appreciation of water conservation. By engaging in projects like sewing water drops, participating in interactive storytelling, and observing local ecosystems, students learned about water’s importance and developed teamwork, creativity, and scientific inquiry skills. This holistic approach to environmental education has fostered a deeper connection to our aquatic environments and inspired a commitment to preserving them.
One of the most memorable events was the engagement of B-class students in an interactive fairy tale. They had the opportunity to create a short story about a water drop named Bleu, which they had already crafted as plush dolls, and experience it through enjoyable yet educational activities.
This multifaceted project enriches our curriculum and instils a lasting appreciation for our vital aquatic environments and the importance of water conservation, especially in times of evident water scarcity in our local community.
Utilizing innovative instructional techniques encompassing drama, art, and motion has transformed our approach to education, particularly in fostering skills and positive attitudes towards empathy and environmental issues.
