Every drop finds its way to a river and from there to the sea

Kohila, Estonia

1st FUNDING CALL

The school is part of the Eco-Schools network and the Baltic Sea Project of UNESCO-related schools. The activities carried out are also related to the objectives of these projects. The goals of the project are:

1. to deepen the community’s knowledge about the biodiversity of our local river from the roots and thereby encourage and develop the inner will to protect their environment (to protect it, you need to know something);

2. enable cooperation within the Kohila community and the broader community of students, teachers and families of Raplamaa;

3. to upload the data of their fieldwork and encourage the input of data collected by cooperation organizations as citizen science projects to the PlutoF platform, from where the data is collected in the national database of Estonian biodiversity;

4. to further develop a school project web platform that documents our work and provides needed help in identifying freshwater species throughout our region. Conduct practical lessons related to the national and school curriculum during the entire school cycle – from the beginning of primary classes to the end of high school – at our school. To support water literacy in general.

A school-wide celebration of Earth Day and Water Day with guest classes and workshops dedicated to protecting our local fresh water and the Baltic Sea and expanding the theme to the world’s oceans. There will be workshops for teachers and students. We will organize an exhibition of the school’s best aquatic life photos to further support learning about species.

Our project will increase water literacy, skills, and knowledge of freshwater ecosystems in the Baltic Sea region. The students will experience citizen science in action firsthand by collecting data from freshwater ecosystems and uploading it to a national database through online platforms and apps.
