reBLUE: circular economy and plastic waste reduction

The “reBLUE” project aims to promote students’ awareness of the circular economy and plastic waste reduction. Recognizing the problem of tourists leaving discarded plastic beach toys, the project focuses on raising awareness about plastic pollution and advocating for sustainable actions.
Objectives:
- Raise Awareness about Plastic Pollution: Educate the school community and beachgoers about the environmental impact of plastic waste.
- Promote Circular Economy: Encourage reuse of plastic beach toys and introduce students to circular economy principles.
- Support Blue Economy Careers: Guide students towards careers related to sustainable marine and coastal management.
Key Activities:
- Creating and Installing Wooden Boxes: Students will construct wooden boxes on beaches where tourists can borrow and return beach toys, reducing the need for new plastic toys.
- Environmental Education: Participate in seminars and competitions on the circular economy, pollution, and sustainable development.
- Water Quality Monitoring: Conduct water quality assessments at Blue Flag beaches during different seasons to study the impact of tourism.
- Community Awareness Campaigns: Create videos, social media content, and educational materials to raise awareness about plastic pollution and sustainable practices.
- Collaborative Efforts: Partner with other schools and organizations for comparative studies and knowledge sharing.
Project Phases:
- Planning and Coordination (April-May 2024): Establish teams, plan activities, and prepare materials.
- Implementation (June 2024-February 2025): Conduct visits, install boxes, monitor feedback, and participate in educational programs.
- Evaluation and Dissemination (January-February 2025): Assess project outcomes, share results through media, and expand participation.
Outputs:
- Wooden Boxes: Durable and weather-resistant boxes with instructions for use and QR codes for feedback.
- Educational Materials: Open-access lesson plans, presentations, and multimedia content on circular economy and marine protection.
- Awareness Campaigns: Informative leaflets, posters, and videos promoting sustainable beach practices.
- Data and Documentation: Comprehensive reports on water quality, plastic waste, and project impacts, available on shared platforms.
The reBLUE project addresses immediate environmental concerns and fosters a long-term commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship among students and the broader community.
