Literacy in Science Know-how and Education For Mediterranean Sea Protection

Barcelona, Spain

2nd FUNDING CALL

LikeMySea project aims to investigate Mediterranean Sea protection by comparing the coasts of Barcelona and Split, enhancing scientific literacy and fostering environmental awareness among students.

Key Objectives:

  • Improve understanding of the Mediterranean’s environmental impacts.
  • Engage students in citizen science projects.
  • Foster responsibility for protecting the Mediterranean Sea.

Planned Activities:

  1. Data Collection: Students will monitor oceanographic parameters like sea temperature, salinity, and transparency using low-cost sensors, conduct laboratory tests, and analyze data.
  2. Biodiversity Research: Observing and classifying local aquatic species through bio-snorkel photography.
  3. Beach Cleaning Campaign: Partnering with local organizations to clean beaches, track data, and understand plastic pollution impacts.
  4. Creative Awareness Campaigns: Develop posters, presentations, and social media content to raise awareness about marine protection.
  5. Art Competition: Encouraging artistic expression related to marine conservation.

Project Phases:

  • M1-M2: Introduction and initial data collection.
  • M3-M9: Ongoing measurements and biodiversity observations.
  • M9: Beach cleaning campaign and student mobility exchanges.
  • M10: Communication activities and art competition.

Main Outputs:

  1. Database of Results: Compiled water quality and biodiversity data shared on the MINKA citizen science platform.
  2. Educational Materials: Booklets, lesson plans, and videos for future project replication.
  3. Blogs and Newsletters: Student-led blogs, monthly newsletters, and local expositions to disseminate findings and promote marine conservation.

The LikeMySea project will transform students from passive learners to active citizen scientists, fostering a deep understanding and commitment to Mediterranean Sea protection. By engaging with local and international stakeholders, the project aims to create a lasting impact on environmental responsibility and marine sustainability.
