The “SAFE: School Advocating Fishing Ethics” project is a powerful initiative aimed at combating destructive fishing practices in Georgia’s rivers, lakes, and seas. It’s a project that empowers students to become environmental advocates, driving community awareness and promoting sustainable fishing. By combining education, creative campaigns, and digital resources, this project is making significant strides in protecting Georgia’s aquatic biodiversity.
Objectives: Empowering Advocates for Sustainable Fishing
The project’s objectives are designed to create lasting change:
- Improve Student Awareness: To educate Georgian school students about destructive fishing and overfishing.
- Promote Conservation: To involve students in the preservation of fish populations in rivers, lakes, and the Black Sea.
- Develop Educational Resources: To create digital tools and campaigns that promote sustainable fishing practices.
- Align with EU Mission: To contribute to the EU Mission “Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030” through public engagement and digital knowledge systems.
Activities and Collaborations: A Comprehensive Approach
The project employs a multifaceted approach, combining education, outreach, and digital innovation:
- Empowering School Students (Workshops):
- Interactive training on sustainable and destructive fishing practices.
- Educational visit to the Georgian National Museum’s Fish section.
- Development of 10 digital infographic cards on fishing regulations and impacts.
- Creation of a video lesson and 1-minute animation on destructive fishing.
- Training on organizing and running advocacy campaigns.
- “Fish SaFer” Campaign:
- Placement of informational banners with QR codes at key fishing locations.
- Organization of a photo/video challenge to document illegal fishing activities.
- Final multiplier event to present project results.
- Digital Resource Development:
- Creation of an informative project webpage.
- Creation of digital information about destructive fishing.
- Creation of a set of 10 digital infographic cards.
- Creation of a video lesson and 1 minute animation.
- Creation of visibility materials, including photos and videos.
The project includes collaboration with:
- Georgian Carp Fishing Federation
- Umbrella (Youth Organization)
- Georgian National Museum
