Sea Guardians: Unraveling the Secrets of Tidal Pools

This project involves four different school centres. The project engages elementary school students directly, while kindergarten, secondary, and high school students participate indirectly through shared experiences.
SeaG’s primary objectives are to understand tidal pool biodiversity, identify various species, recognize pollution risks, and acknowledge the role of microorganisms in ecosystems. Students will develop essential scientific skills, such as formulating questions, raising hypotheses, and drawing conclusions, while also enhancing their digital literacy through the use of digital tools for research, collaboration, and communication.
Students will embark on field trips to Praia do Sul to collect litter and explore tidal pools with a marine biologist. They will analyze water quality using the microboard and collect samples for laboratory analysis. Additionally, students will create art objects from collected litter and conduct experiments with daphnia to observe pollution effects.
Throughout the project, students will use resources like Padlet, Genially, and the Tidal Pools Routes app. They will participate in problem-solving activities, create e-portfolios on Canva, and engage in a Kahoot quiz to assess their knowledge.
An exhibition showcasing students’ art constructions and an updated “Roteiro entre marés” app with data on Mafra’s coastline will culminate the project. These activities aim to raise awareness about marine ecosystem preservation, reduce plastic use, and find solutions to minimize environmental impacts.
The SeaG project aspires to train students and teachers as Sea Guardians and promote active advocacy for marine preservation. By transforming community behaviours and addressing threats like pollution, the project aims to safeguard the health and biodiversity of tidal pools and the broader marine environment.
